Appreciative Inquiry (AI) is a strengths-based approach to organizational change.  It originated in the 1970’s and has since grown into wide application, reaching not just businesses, but groups and organizations as diverse as the city of Chicago and the United Nations.  The AI model starts by encouraging organizations to identify what’s working well in their system, and then uses this insight to imagine a future that is built on a foundation of past success.  This InfoLine covers a high level review of the process and strategy, and is a great springboard for then exploring the many other publications available on the subject.

The American Society of Training and Development has sponsored a series of booklets they call “InfoLines.”  These are essentially Cliff Notes for practitioners on a wide range of topics.  This InfoLine focuses on partnerships…different types, critical success factors and strategies for success.  If you’re looking for a quick overview, this will give you the basics and get you thinking about how to manage and improve the partnerships tied to your own business endeavors.

Human Performance Technology (HPT) is a systematic approach to improving productivity and competence, using strategy, methods and procedures that are centered on the performance of people.  Many of its concepts and practices are captured in the Handbook of Human Performance Technology, which is now in its 3rd edition, and which represents some of the best thinking in the field.  In the chapter co-authored by Jennifer, she takes a step into the future and explores how chaos theory and complex systems relate to performance in the workplace.  Both practical and thought-provoking, it is just one of many contributions that make the book a worthy reference to explore.

“As the world has become increasingly complex, we have sought business success by

implementing new ways to add control and order across our systems. However, the most

powerful systems are those in which individual employees adapt in response to a dynamic

marketplace. This article offers a new view of systems—an enlightened view—that provides

the means for designing high-energy enterprises that can take on the most pressing challenges

we face today.”
